METS NEWS UPDATE: WRIGHT TO PLAY FOR USA IN UPCOMING WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

Both the New York Post and New York Daily News are reporting that David Wright today announced his commitment to participate in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, making him the first Met ever to represent Team USA.

Wright joins Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter, Red Sox' American League 2008 Most Valuable player second-baseman Dustin Pedroia, Braves' third-baseman Chipper Jones and catcher Brian McCann and Angels' starting pitcher John Lackey.

Team USA opens its games in March in Toronto, with games against Canada, Venezuela and Italy. Mets' first-baseman Carlos Delgado and center fielder Carlos Beltran have signed on to represent Puerto Rico. Shortstop Jose Reyes has been quoted as saying he'd like to suit up for the Dominican Republic, as both pitchers Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez have said publicly they'd like to represent their native Venezuela.
